Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors after the last frost. Plant seeds about 1/8 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny location. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until germination, which usually takes 10-20 days. Once seedlings are established, water regularly but allow the soil to dry between waterings. 'Ruby Star' prefers full sun and well-draining soil. Thin seedlings to 12-18 inches apart to allow room for growth. Fertilize lightly in the spring with a balanced fertilizer. Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowering. Once established, coneflowers are drought-tolerant and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.
