Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors after the last frost. Plant seeds about 1/8 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny location. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which usually takes 10-20 days. Once established, water regularly, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Echinacea prefers full sun and well-draining soil. Once seedlings are large enough, thin them to 12-18 inches apart to allow for proper growth. Fertilize lightly in the spring with a balanced fertilizer. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Coneflowers are drought-tolerant once established and will typically bloom in mid-summer. Harvest flowers when fully open for drying or seed saving.
