Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or directly in the garden once the soil has warmed. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny location. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Thin seedlings to 12-18 inches apart to allow space for growth. Cabbages prefer cooler temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C) and full sun for at least 6 hours a day. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost to support strong growth. Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest the cabbage heads when they are firm and fully formed, usually 70-85 days after sowing.
