Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors once the soil is warm. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil in a sunny location. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Thin seedlings to 6-8 inches apart to allow space for the large stalks to develop. Leeks prefer cooler temperatures (55°F - 75°F/13°C - 24°C) and full sun. As they grow, mound soil around the base to encourage long, tender white stems. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and mulch to retain moisture. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer or compost to promote healthy growth. Harvest when the leeks are large and firm, typically 100-120 days after sowing.
