Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date, or directly outdoors in early spring. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-draining, fertile soil. Rhubarb prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells. Thin seedlings to 12-18 inches apart to allow for proper growth. Fertilize with compost or a balanced fertilizer to support strong, healthy plants. Rhubarb can take 2-3 years to establish before harvesting. In the first year, let the plants grow without harvesting. After that, harvest only a few stalks at a time in early spring, leaving enough for the plant to continue growing. Avoid harvesting during the summer to allow the plant to build strength for the next season.
