Start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep in seed trays filled with well-draining, fertile soil. Keep the soil moist and at 65-75°F (18-24°C) for germination, which takes about 10-14 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them outdoors in a sunny, well-drained location 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost. Space plants 6-8 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches apart. Water consistently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and mulch around plants to retain moisture and prevent weeds. Leeks prefer cool temperatures (45°F - 55°F/7°C - 13°C) and can withstand frost. Fertilize with compost or a balanced fertilizer to support strong growth. Harvest leeks when they are large enough, typically 120-150 days after sowing, and can be left in the ground through the winter for harvesting as needed.
