🗓️ When to Sow

  • Best Time: Late summer to early autumn (August to October).

  • Seeds need a period of cold stratification (winter chill) to germinate reliably.

  • If sowing indoors, stratify seeds artificially (see below).


🌱 How to Sow

Option 1: Outdoor Sowing (Recommended)

  1. Choose a Shady Spot
    Wild garlic thrives in moist, shady woodland-like conditions.

  2. Prepare Soil
    Loosen and enrich soil with leaf mold or compost. Soil should be moist, humus-rich, and well-draining.

  3. Sow Seeds

    • Sow seeds on the surface or just 1–2 mm deep.

    • Space them lightly — they will form clumps over time.

  4. Water
    Water gently and keep soil evenly moist, not soggy.

  5. Let Nature Stratify
    Leave seeds through winter — germination occurs in early spring, sometimes taking 6–18 months depending on conditions.


Option 2: Indoor Sowing (Artificial Stratification)

  1. Cold Stratify Seeds

    • Mix seeds with damp sand or vermiculite.

    • Seal in a bag and place in the refrigerator (2–5°C / 35–41°F) for 6–8 weeks.

  2. Sow After Stratification

    • Sow shallowly in pots or trays with moist compost.

    • Keep at cool room temperature (about 15°C / 59°F).

    • Germination can still take weeks to months, so be patient.


🌿 After Germination

  • Seedlings resemble grass at first — they grow slowly.

  • Transplant to permanent shady location once large enough to handle.

  • Space about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.


🌼 Growing Notes

  • Habitat: Partial to full shade, moist woodland-type soil.

  • Watering: Keep moist during growing season, drier in dormancy (summer).

  • Lifespan: Perennial — will die back in summer and regrow each spring.

  • Harvesting: Leaves are best harvested before flowering in early spring.
