Nigra Hollyhock is a striking ornamental variety known for its very dark burgundy, deep maroon, chocolate-purple to almost black flowers. The flowers grow along tall, upright stems, creating a dramatic vertical display.
It is excellent for garden borders, cottage-style gardens, walls, fences, and as a background plant. In the Gulf, it performs best during the cooler months because intense summer heat can reduce growth and flowering.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
For the Gulf area, sow Nigra Hollyhock during the cooler season:
- Gulf region: September–February
- Kuwait: October–January
- UAE & Qatar: September–February
- Saudi Arabia & Bahrain: September–February
- Oman: September–February, depending on local temperature and elevation
For Kuwait, October to December is particularly suitable for starting seeds.
🌿 How to Sow
- Use a fertile, loose, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Sow seeds about 5–10 mm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine soil.
- Water gently without disturbing the seeds.
- Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist.
- Place the seed tray in a bright, well-ventilated location.
- Avoid exposing newly sown seeds to intense Gulf heat.
🌡️ Germination
- Ideal temperature: 18–24°C
- Germination time: approximately 10–21 days
- Germination may take longer under less suitable conditions.
- Avoid excessive heat, particularly temperatures above about 30°C.
🌱 Seedling Care
Once seedlings appear:
- Provide plenty of bright light.
- Give gentle morning sunlight.
- Protect them from strong afternoon sun.
- Water when the upper surface of the soil begins to dry.
- Provide good airflow.
- Thin crowded seedlings to prevent weak, stretched growth.
🌿 Transplanting
Transplant when the seedlings have developed several true leaves.
- Spacing: approximately 45–60 cm between plants
- Choose a deep container if growing in pots.
- Harden seedlings gradually before placing them outdoors.
- Transplant during the cooler part of the day.
- Avoid excessive root disturbance.
Because Hollyhocks can become tall, choose a location protected from strong winds or provide support when necessary.
☀️ Sunlight
Nigra Hollyhock prefers plenty of sunlight.
- Aim for approximately 5–8 hours of bright sunlight.
- In the Gulf, morning sunlight is ideal.
- Provide afternoon shade during very hot weather.
- Avoid locations next to heat-reflecting walls, concrete, or metal surfaces.
💧 Watering
- Keep young seedlings evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Once established, water deeply when the upper soil begins to dry.
- Increase watering during hot, dry weather when necessary.
- Water at the base of the plant rather than constantly wetting the leaves.
- Good drainage is essential.
🌱 Soil
Use fertile, loose, well-draining soil.
A suitable mix can contain:
- Garden or quality potting soil
- Aged compost
- Coco peat
- Perlite or pumice
- A little coarse sand if additional drainage is needed
Avoid heavy soil that remains wet for long periods.
🌿 Fertilizing
After the plants become established:
- Apply a balanced fertilizer at a moderate rate.
- Feed approximately every 4–6 weeks during active growth, if needed.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leaves rather than flowers.
- Adequate phosphorus and potassium can support flowering and strong stems.
🌸 Flowering
Nigra produces tall flower spikes covered with very dark burgundy to almost black blooms.
Flower color can appear slightly different depending on sunlight and growing conditions, ranging from deep maroon and chocolate-purple to nearly black.
Because the plants can become tall, staking may be useful, especially in windy Gulf locations.
🔥 Gulf Climate Tips
- Start seeds during the cooler Gulf months.
- Protect young plants from temperatures above approximately 35°C.
- Give morning sun and afternoon protection during hot periods.
- Avoid placing containers on extremely hot rooftops or concrete.
- Maintain good drainage, particularly in humid coastal areas.
- Protect tall plants from strong winds.
- Extreme summer heat can cause growth and flowering to decline.
🌱 Growing Tip: For the best results in Kuwait and the Gulf, sow Nigra Hollyhock during the cooler months and establish strong plants before the arrival of extreme summer heat.
