Osteospermum ecklonis prefers mild temperatures and performs particularly well during the cooler months in the Gulf. The extreme summer heat can reduce flowering and stress the plants, so timing is important.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Gulf: September–November and January–February.
  • Kuwait: October–November is the preferred sowing period.
  • A second good window is January–February.
  • Avoid outdoor sowing during June–August because of extreme heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

  1. Use a light, fertile, loose, and well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
  3. Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
  4. Cover lightly with fine growing medium.
  5. Water gently using a fine spray.
  6. Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
  7. Place the seed tray in a bright location with mild temperatures.
  8. Germination generally takes around 10–21 days.

🌱 Transplanting

  • Transplant when seedlings have developed 2–3 sets of true leaves.
  • Harden seedlings gradually before moving them outdoors.
  • Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart.
  • Choose a location with good air circulation and excellent drainage.
  • Handle the young roots carefully during transplanting.

☀️ Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
  • In the Gulf, provide morning sun with afternoon shade during warmer periods.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained, slightly sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Watering: Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Keep young plants more consistently moist while establishing.
  • Avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Fertilizer: Add compost before planting and use a balanced flowering fertilizer during active growth.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage instead of flowers.

🌸 Flowering & Maintenance

  • Plants grown from seed may flower approximately 12–16 weeks after sowing, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
  • Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage further flowering.
  • Pinch young plants lightly once established to encourage a bushier shape.
  • Remove weak, damaged, or diseased growth.
  • Good spacing and airflow help reduce fungal problems.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • In Kuwait, October–November is the best starting period.
  • During warm weather, protect plants from intense afternoon sun.
  • Around 30–50% afternoon shade can be helpful during periods of high heat.
  • Avoid planting directly beside heat-reflecting walls or paved surfaces.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • A light mulch layer can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.
  • Excellent drainage is especially important during humid weather.
  • If grown in containers, move plants to a cooler, partially shaded position during extreme heat.

Tip: For Kuwait, sow African Daisy White (Osteospermum ecklonis) in October–November. This gives the seedlings time to establish during mild weather and provides a good opportunity for flowering through winter and spring.
