Seeding Alpine Strawberry 'Four Seasons' (Fragaria vesca var. semperflorens) is a great choice for gardeners who want small, sweet, everbearing strawberries that produce fruit from spring through fall—even in their first year if started early.

Here’s how to grow them from seed:

🍓 When to Sow

Indoors (Recommended):

  • 8–10 weeks before the last frost (late winter to early spring)

  • You can also sow indoors in summer for a fall transplant and fruiting next year.

Outdoors (Not ideal):

  • Seeds are tiny and sensitive—indoor sowing gives better control.

🌱 How to Sow

Seed Prep

  • Cold stratification recommended:

    • Place seeds in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 2–4 weeks to mimic winter and improve germination.

Soil & Containers

  • Use sterile seed-starting mix (light and well-draining).

  • Sow in shallow trays or cell flats.

Sowing Instructions

  • Do not cover the seeds with soil; they need light to germinate.

  • Press gently onto the moist soil surface.

Moisture & Light

  • Cover with plastic dome or clear lid to retain humidity.

  • Mist gently to keep the surface moist (not wet).

  • Provide bright light (sunny windowsill or grow lights).

🌡️ Germination Conditions

  • Temperature: 65–75°F (18–24°C)

  • Time: 14–30 days (can be slow—be patient)

🌱 After Germination

  • Remove cover once sprouted to prevent damping off.

  • Thin seedlings or transplant to individual pots when they have 2–3 true leaves.

🌿 Transplanting Outdoors

  • Harden off seedlings (expose gradually to outdoor conditions for 5–7 days).

  • Transplant after last frost into fertile, well-draining soil.

  • Spacing: 10–12 inches apart

☀️ Care & Yield

  • Full sun to partial shade

  • Regular watering but avoid soggy soil

  • Will begin producing tiny red berries in their first year, with continuous fruiting through frost in mild climates
