๐Ÿ—“๏ธ When to Sow

  • Indoors: Start seeds 6โ€“8 weeks before your last frost.

  • Outdoors: Direct sow as early as soil can be worked in spring โ€” Alyssum tolerates light frost and cool conditions.

๐ŸŒฑ How to Sow

โœ… Indoors (for early blooms or short seasons)

  1. Prepare Trays

    • Use shallow trays or pots with fine-textured, well-draining seed-starting mix.

  2. Sow the Seeds

    • Surface sow: Sprinkle seeds evenly on top of the moist soil.

    • Do not cover โ€” Alyssum seeds need light to germinate.

    • Press gently into the soil for good contact.

  3. Moisture & Light

    • Mist lightly to keep the surface moist (not soggy).

    • Cover with clear plastic or a humidity dome until germination.

    • Place in bright indirect light or under grow lights.

  4. Temperature

    • Keep at 65โ€“70ยฐF (18โ€“21ยฐC).

    • Germination usually takes 5โ€“10 days.

โœ… Direct Sowing Outdoors (Very Easy)

  1. Choose a Site

    • Full sun to partial shade.

    • Well-drained soil; tolerates poor soils but dislikes sogginess.

  2. Sow Seeds

    • Lightly rake the soil surface.

    • Scatter seeds thinly and press them into the soil.

    • Do not cover.

  3. Watering

    • Mist or gently water to keep soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge.

๐ŸŒฟ After Germination

  • Thin seedlings to 4โ€“6 inches (10โ€“15 cm) apart once theyโ€™re big enough to handle.

  • Seedlings form low mounds and spread gently across the surface.

๐ŸŒผ Growing Notes

  • Height: 4โ€“6 inches (10โ€“15 cm); spreading habit.

  • Bloom Period: Spring to early summer; may rebloom in autumn if trimmed back.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist, especially in hot or dry conditions.

  • Deadheading: Not required, but trimming spent blooms or shearing lightly encourages reblooming.

  • Soil: Tolerates poor to average soil; must be well-drained.

  • Pollinator Friendly: Attracts bees and hoverflies.

  • Self-sows lightly in ideal conditions.
