Amaryllis is a spectacular bulb plant known for its large, trumpet-shaped flowers carried on tall, sturdy stems. Flowers may be red, pink, white, orange, striped, or mixed depending on the variety.

It grows very well in containers and can flower beautifully during the cooler months in the Gulf. Amaryllis prefers warmth but does not tolerate prolonged extreme Gulf summer heat, especially when grown in containers.

🌿 How to Plant the Bulbs

1. Choose a firm, healthy bulb without soft or rotten areas.
2. Use a pot with good drainage holes.
3. Fill the pot with loose, fertile, well-draining soil.
4. Place the bulb with the pointed growing tip facing upward.
5. Leave the upper one-third to one-half of the bulb above the soil surface.
6. Gently firm the soil around the roots and lower part of the bulb.
7. Water lightly after planting.
8. Do not keep the soil constantly wet, as excessive moisture can cause bulb rot.

🌡️ Sprouting

• Amaryllis usually begins producing roots and shoots within 2–8 weeks, depending on temperature and bulb condition.
• Warm conditions encourage growth, but excessive Gulf heat can stress the bulb.
• Keep newly planted bulbs in a bright, well-ventilated location.

🌱 Early Plant Care

Once the shoot appears:

• Gradually increase watering as growth develops.
• Provide strong natural light.
• Protect young shoots from intense afternoon sun.
• Rotate containers occasionally so the flower stalk grows upright.
• Provide support if a tall flower stalk becomes heavy.

Use a loose, fertile, fast-draining mixture such as:

• Quality potting soil
• Mature compost
• Perlite or pumice
• A small amount of coarse sand

Good drainage is especially important in the Gulf climate.

• Add a small amount of mature compost before planting.
• Once active growth begins, use a balanced bulb or flowering-plant fertilizer according to the product instructions.
• Feed regularly during active growth if needed.

🌸 Flowering

Amaryllis produces impressive trumpet-shaped flowers on tall stems. A healthy mature bulb may produce one or more flower stalks.

After flowering, remove the faded flowers, but allow healthy green leaves to remain because they help the bulb store energy for future flowering.
