1 Bulb
Amaryllis ‘Tres Chic’ is an elegant and colorful Hippeastrum variety grown from bulbs. It produces striking single flowers with a green apple-colored center, white inner petals, and ruby-red to deep red outer petal tips. The flowers are typically around 14 cm across, carried on tall, sturdy stems that can reach approximately 50–60 cm.
It is particularly well suited to pots and containers and is relatively easy to grow. Under good conditions, flowering can begin about 6–10 weeks after planting.
🌱 Best Planting Time
- Gulf area: September–February
- Kuwait: October–January
- UAE & Qatar: October–February
- Saudi Arabia & Bahrain: October–February
- Oman: September–February
- Best period in Kuwait: October–December
In the Gulf, planting during the cooler months is recommended. Avoid starting bulbs during periods of extreme summer heat.
🌿 How to Plant the Bulbs
- Choose a firm, healthy bulb without soft or damaged areas.
- Select a sturdy pot with good drainage holes. A pot only slightly larger than the bulb is usually suitable.
- Fill it with a loose, fertile, well-draining potting mix.
- Place the bulb with the roots facing downward and the pointed growing tip upward.
- Cover only the lower portion of the bulb. Leave approximately one-third to one-half of the bulb above the soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the bulb.
- Water lightly after planting.
- Keep the soil only slightly moist until the flower stalk begins to emerge.
Do not bury the entire bulb, as excessive moisture around the bulb can increase the risk of rot.
🌡️ Sprouting
- Growth generally begins within several weeks.
- ‘Tres Chic’ can flower approximately 6–10 weeks after planting under suitable conditions.
- A warm environment and bright light encourage faster growth.
- Avoid excessive watering while waiting for the first shoot.
🌱 Early Plant Care
Once the flower stalk or leaves appear:
- Gradually increase watering.
- Keep the plant in a bright location.
- Provide good airflow.
- Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage upright growth.
- Support the flower stalk if the large flower heads cause it to bend.
- Avoid sudden changes from a cool environment to intense Gulf heat.
☀️ Sunlight
- Provide bright light and morning sunlight.
- During the cooler Gulf season, several hours of direct sun can be beneficial.
- Protect the plant from strong afternoon heat.
- In very hot weather, provide afternoon shade.
- Avoid placing the pot directly on hot concrete, metal, or against heat-reflecting walls.
💧 Watering
- Water lightly immediately after planting.
- Until growth appears, allow the upper part of the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Once active growth begins, water more regularly.
- Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Always allow excess water to drain from the pot.
- Reduce watering after flowering as the plant enters its resting period.
🌱 Soil
Use a light, fertile and well-draining mixture, for example:
- Quality potting soil
- Mature compost
- Perlite or pumice
- A small amount of coarse sand
Excellent drainage is especially important in the Gulf climate.
🌿 Fertilizing
- A small amount of mature compost can be mixed into the soil before planting.
- Once active growth begins, use a balanced bulb or flowering-plant fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Continue light feeding during active leaf growth if needed.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leaves rather than flowers.
🌸 Flowering
‘Tres Chic’ produces an especially attractive red, white and green color combination. The apple-green center transitions into white and then ruby-red petal tips, giving the flowers a distinctive star-like appearance. The variety can produce multiple flowers on one or more tall stems.
After flowering, remove the faded flowers and flower stalk when they finish, but keep the healthy green leaves. The leaves help replenish the bulb and store energy for future flowering.
🌿 After-Flowering Care
After flowering:
- Keep the leaves growing in bright light.
- Continue moderate watering.
- Feed lightly during active leaf growth.
- Allow the bulb to build up energy for the next flowering cycle.
- Gradually reduce watering when the foliage naturally begins to decline and the bulb enters dormancy.
🔥 Gulf Climate Tips
- The cooler season is the best time for ‘Tres Chic’ in Kuwait and most Gulf countries.
- Protect the plant from temperatures above approximately 35°C.
- Container growing is recommended because the pot can be moved to a cooler location during heatwaves.
- Morning sun with afternoon protection is ideal during warmer periods.
- Good drainage is essential to prevent bulb rot.
- In humid coastal areas, provide good airflow around the foliage and pot.
- Avoid placing the container on extremely hot rooftops, concrete, or metal surfaces.
🌱 Growing Tip: For Kuwait, plant ‘Tres Chic’ bulbs around October–December, leave about one-third to one-half of the bulb above the soil, water sparingly at first, and place the pot somewhere bright and warm with protection from strong afternoon heat. With good conditions, beautiful flowers may appear in roughly 6–10 weeks.
