How to Seed Arugula / Garden Rocket (Eruca sativa)

1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

   • Outdoors: From October to March, when temperatures are mild (15–25°C / 59–77°F).

   • Indoors or shaded areas: Can also be grown year-round in climate-controlled or shaded spaces with adequate ventilation.

   • Avoid sowing in extreme summer months (May–September) unless grown indoors or under shade net.

2. Sowing Depth:
   Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil.
   Space rows 10–15 cm apart, or broadcast seeds evenly in small garden beds or pots.

3. Soil:
   Prefers loose, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
   Ideal Gulf mix: 40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
   Avoid salty or compacted soil.

4. Light & Temperature:

   • Germination temperature: 15–22°C (59–72°F).

   • Grows best in full morning sun and partial shade in hot climates.

   • Protect from harsh midday sun in Gulf summers.

5. Germination Time:
   Seeds germinate in 5–10 days under warm, moist conditions.

6. Thinning & Spacing:

   • When seedlings reach 5–7 cm tall, thin them to 5–10 cm apart for leafier plants.

   • For baby leaves, thinning is not necessary; simply harvest young leaves directly.

7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

   • Sunlight: Prefers full morning sun with shade during midday heat.

   • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water daily during dry, warm periods.

   • Feeding: Apply organic compost or liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks for fast, healthy growth.

   • Harvest: Begin harvesting 25–35 days after sowing when leaves are 10–15 cm long.

   • Continuous harvesting of outer leaves encourages new growth.

   • The Garden Rocket (Arugula) produces tender, peppery leaves rich in vitamins and perfect for salads, sandwiches, and garnishes.
