Asparagus is a long-lived perennial vegetable grown for its tender young spears, which are rich in vitamins A, C, E, K, folate, and fiber. Once established, asparagus plants can remain productive for 15–20 years or more. Although asparagus prefers temperate climates, it can be successfully grown in the Gulf region during the cooler months with proper irrigation, deep fertile soil, and some afternoon shade during extreme summer heat. Seed-grown plants usually begin producing harvestable spears in 2–3 years.

Seed Preparation

• Soak seeds in warm water (25–30°C) for 24 hours before sowing.
• Replace the water once if it cools significantly.
• No cold stratification is required.

Sowing Method

Watering

• Keep the soil consistently moist during germination.

• Avoid waterlogged soil, as asparagus crowns are susceptible to rot.

Transplanting

• Transplant seedlings when they are 15–20 cm tall and have developed a strong root system.
• Space plants:
  • 30–45 cm apart
• Space rows:
  • 120–150 cm apart
• Plant crowns so the growing point is about 5–8 cm below the soil surface.

Harvesting

• Plants grown from seed should not be harvested during the first two years.
• Begin light harvesting in the third year.
• Harvest spears when they are:
  • 15–20 cm long
  • About 1–2 cm thick
• Cut the spears at ground level using a clean knife.
• Stop harvesting after 6–8 weeks each season to allow the plants to rebuild energy.
