Aster amellus ‘Goliath’ (Italian Aster) is a beautiful perennial flowering plant producing attractive daisy-like blooms, commonly in shades of violet-blue. It prefers cool to mild temperatures, fertile well-drained soil, and good sunlight. In the Gulf, particularly Kuwait, it is best grown during the cooler season, with protection from intense summer heat.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Best sowing period: October–January.
  • Best period in Kuwait: November–December.
  • A second sowing can be made in January–February if temperatures remain mild.
  • Avoid: May–September and periods of extreme summer heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–21°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

  1. Use a light, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with fine soil.
  4. Water gently with a fine spray.
  5. Keep the growing medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
  6. Place the seed tray in a bright location with gentle morning sunlight.
  7. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant carefully.
  8. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart.

⏱ Germination

  • Seeds generally germinate within 14–28 days under suitable conditions.
  • Keep the seed-starting mix consistently moist during germination.
  • Avoid excessive watering.
  • Provide good light after emergence to prevent weak, stretched seedlings.
  • Maintain good airflow around young plants.

🌱 Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
  • In the Gulf, provide morning sun and protection from intense afternoon heat.
  • Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well drained.
  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment and active growth. Allow the upper soil surface to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
  • Fertilizing: Add compost before planting and apply a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce excessive foliage and fewer flowers.
  • Mulch around established plants to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.

🌸 Flowering & Maintenance

  • Aster amellus may take several months to reach flowering when grown from seed.
  • Remove faded flowers to encourage a longer flowering period.
  • Pinching young plants can encourage branching and produce a fuller plant.
  • Avoid heavy pruning during periods of extreme heat.
  • Mature plants may benefit from support in exposed or windy locations.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Cool-season cultivation is strongly recommended in Kuwait and the hotter Gulf regions.
  • November and December are particularly suitable for starting seeds.
  • Protect young seedlings from hot, dry winds.
  • During warmer periods, provide 30–50% afternoon shade.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • Container-grown plants can be moved to a cooler, partially shaded location during heat waves.
  • Good drainage is essential, particularly in humid coastal areas.
  • For the best flowering performance, aim for the main growth and flowering period during the cooler months.
