๐Ÿ—“๏ธ When to Sow

  • Indoors: Start 6โ€“8 weeks before your last expected frost.

  • Outdoors: Direct sow after the last frost, when the soil is warm and dry enough to work.

๐ŸŒฟ Indoor sowing is preferred for earlier blooms and stronger starts.

๐ŸŒฑ How to Sow Indoors (Recommended)

  1. Containers & Soil

    • Use seed trays or small pots with fine-textured, well-draining seed-starting mix.

  2. Sowing Depth

    • Sow seeds ยผ inch (6 mm) deep.

    • Lightly cover with fine soil and press gently.

  3. Watering

    • Mist to moisten soil without disturbing seeds.

    • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.

  4. Temperature

    • Ideal germination temperature: 18โ€“21ยฐC (65โ€“70ยฐF).

    • Germination usually takes 7โ€“14 days.

  5. After Germination

    • Move seedlings to bright light or grow lights.

    • When seedlings have 2โ€“3 true leaves, transplant to larger containers if needed.

    • Harden off before transplanting outdoors.

๐ŸŒฑ Direct Sowing Outdoors

  1. Location

    • Full sun; well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

  2. Soil Prep

    • Rake smooth and moisten lightly before sowing.

  3. Sowing

    • Sow seeds ยผ inch deep, spaced thinly.

    • Thin to 6โ€“10 inches (15โ€“25 cm) apart when seedlings are large enough to handle.

๐ŸŒผ Growing Notes

  • Height: 8โ€“12 inches (20โ€“30 cm); compact, bushy habit

  • Bloom Time: Late summer to fall

  • Watering: Moderate โ€” keep evenly moist, especially during dry spells.

  • Feeding: A light application of balanced fertilizer encourages more blooms.

  • Deadheading: Promotes prolonged flowering.

  • Disease: Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of powdery mildew and aster yellows; rotate planting location yearly if possible.
