Atherton Raspberry is a tropical to subtropical raspberry native to northeastern Australia. Unlike common raspberries, it tolerates warmer and more humid conditions, producing bright red, sweet-tart berries rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. The fruits are delicious fresh and are also excellent for jams, desserts, juices, and smoothies. Although more heat-tolerant than traditional raspberries, Atherton Raspberry still benefits from protection against the intense Gulf summer heat. It grows best in gardens, large containers, shade houses, or greenhouses.

Best Planting Time

• October to January (recommended)
• February (in cool greenhouses)
• Avoid sowing during the hottest summer months.

Seed Preparation

• Remove seeds from ripe berries and wash away all fruit pulp.
• Soak seeds in clean water for 24 hours.
• Cold stratification is optional, but refrigerating seeds at 3–5°C for 2–4 weeks can improve germination and uniformity.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Coco peat
• 30% Compost
• 20% Garden soil
• 10% Perlite

Ideal soil pH:

• 5.5–6.5

Sowing Method

• Sow seeds in seed trays or small pots.
• Plant seeds 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
• Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
• Keep the growing medium consistently moist until germination.

• Ideal germination temperature: 20–25°C
• Ideal growing temperature: 18–28°C
• Requires 4–6 hours of morning sun or bright filtered light.
• Protect plants from strong afternoon sun, especially during late spring and summer.

Watering

• Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
• Water whenever the top 2–3 cm of soil begins to dry.
• Avoid waterlogging while maintaining consistent moisture.

Germination Time

• 3–8 weeks
• Some seeds may germinate over a longer period.

Transplanting

• Transplant seedlings when they have:
  • 4–6 true leaves
  • Height of 15–20 cm
• Space plants:
  • 80–120 cm apart
• Space rows:
  • 1.5–2 m apart

Fruiting

• Plants grown from seed usually begin producing fruit after:
  • 18–30 months
• Harvest berries when they are fully red, soft, and easily detach from the plant.

Gulf Climate Tips

• Grow in partial shade during hot weather.
• Apply organic mulch to keep the root zone cool and conserve moisture.
• Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but ensure excellent drainage.
• Fertilize every 4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
• Protect plants from hot desert winds.
• Atherton Raspberry performs best in large containers, shade houses, cooled greenhouses, and sheltered gardens in the Gulf region.
