How to Seed Baby’s Breath ‘Crimson’ (Gypsophila elegans)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors: From October to February, when the temperature is mild (15–25°C / 59–77°F).

    • Indoors or nursery trays: From December to February for early spring planting.

    • Avoid sowing from April to September, as high Gulf heat shortens bloom duration and weakens plants.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds very shallowly — about 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
Lightly press the seeds into the soil surface and cover with a fine layer of soil or vermiculite.

  3. Soil:
Prefers light, well-drained soil with moderate fertility.
    Ideal Gulf mix: 40% sandy soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
Avoid rich or compacted soils, which lead to excessive leaf growth and fewer flowers.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Germination temperature: 18–22°C (64–72°F).

    • Requires bright light or full sun for best flowering.

    • In the Gulf, full morning sun and light afternoon shade is ideal.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 7–14 days under warm, slightly moist conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • Baby’s Breath dislikes transplanting, so direct sowing is preferred.

    • If started indoors, transplant seedlings carefully when 5–7 cm tall.

    • Space plants 20–25 cm apart for airy, branching growth.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

    • Sunlight: Prefers full sun for best color and bloom size; provide light shade in strong summer light.

    • Watering: Water moderately, allowing soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot.

    • Feeding: Use a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.

    • Maintenance: Remove faded blooms to encourage continuous flowering.

    • The ‘Crimson’ Baby’s Breath produces clouds of small crimson-pink flowers — perfect for bouquets, borders, and dried arrangements.

    • Blooms from late winter to early summer in Gulf conditions.
