How to Seed Bachelor’s Button ‘Blue Boy’ (Centaurea cyanus)

  1. Sowing Time:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May for summer blooms, or in autumn (September–October) for earlier flowers the following spring. Seeds can also be started indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in finely raked, moist soil. Cover lightly and press gently.

  3. Soil:
Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid rich soil, which can produce more leaves and fewer flowers. Ideal for poor or sandy ground.

  4. Light & Temperature:
Choose a sunny, open location. Ideal germination temperature is 15–20 °C (59–68 °F).

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate within 7–14 days under good light and moisture conditions.

  6. Thinning / Transplanting:
When seedlings are about 5–7 cm tall, thin or transplant them to 20–25 cm apart for strong, bushy growth.

  7. Growing Tips:

    • Water regularly until plants are established, then sparingly.

    • Remove faded blooms to encourage continuous flowering.

    • The ‘Blue Boy’ variety produces vivid blue, double flowers perfect for cut flowers, borders, and wildflower meadows.

    • Blooms from early summer to autumn and attracts bees, butterflies, and pollinators.
