Black Cherry Tomato is a popular heirloom cherry tomato variety that produces small, deep purple-brown fruits with a rich, sweet flavor. It performs exceptionally well during the cooler growing season in the Gulf when protected from extreme heat.

🌱 Best Growing Season in the Gulf

  • Start seeds: August–October (for autumn and winter harvest) or January–February (for spring harvest).
  • Best outdoor growing period: October–April.
  • Tomatoes grow best in temperatures between 18–30°C.
  • Avoid growing during peak summer, as temperatures above 35°C can reduce flowering and fruit production.

🌿 Seed Starting

  1. Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow seeds 6 mm (¼ inch) deep.
  3. Cover lightly with soil and water gently.
  4. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
  5. Maintain a temperature of 21–29°C for optimal germination.

⏱ Germination

  • Seeds usually germinate within 5–10 days.
  • Place seedlings under bright light immediately after emergence to prevent legginess.

🌱 Transplanting

  • Transplant seedlings when they have:
    • 2–3 sets of true leaves
    • Strong stems and healthy roots
  • Harden off seedlings for 5–7 days before planting outdoors.
  • Space plants:
    • 50–60 cm between plants
    • 80–100 cm between rows
  • Install stakes, cages, or trellises to support the vigorous vines.

☀️ Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter (pH 6.0–6.8).
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced tomato fertilizer every 2–3 weeks after transplanting.
  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture and reduce soil temperature fluctuations.

🍅 Harvest

  • Harvest fruits when they turn a deep purple-brown to mahogany color and feel slightly firm.
  • Pick regularly to encourage continuous fruit production.
  • Fruits are excellent for fresh eating, salads, roasting, and snacking.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Grow only during the cooler months.
  • Use 30–50% shade cloth if temperatures exceed 32–35°C.
  • Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
  • Ensure good air circulation to minimize fungal diseases.
  • Avoid wetting the foliage during irrigation.
