Blue Enchantment is a classic Tall Bearded Iris with elegant blue flowers and upright, sword-shaped foliage. It is a long-lived perennial that grows from thick underground rhizomes.

It is best grown in a sunny position with excellent drainage. Unlike true bulbs, the rhizome should not be buried deeply, because excessive moisture and deep planting can cause rhizome rot.

🌿 How to Plant the Rhizomes

1. Choose firm, healthy rhizomes with good roots.
2. Select a sunny location with excellent drainage.
3. Loosen the soil to approximately 20–30 cm.
4. Improve heavy soil with compost, coarse sand, perlite, or pumice.
5. Place the rhizome horizontally with the roots spread into the soil.
6. Keep the top of the rhizome at or just slightly below soil level.
7. In very hot, sunny areas, the rhizome can be positioned up to approximately 2–2.5 cm below the soil surface, but avoid deep planting.
8. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart to provide room for clump development and airflow.
9. Water lightly after planting.

Do not bury the rhizome deeply. This is one of the most important planting requirements for bearded iris.

Newly planted rhizomes need time to develop fresh roots. Keep the soil moderately moist during establishment, but never saturated.

In the Gulf, excessive heat can stress newly planted rhizomes, so planting during the cooler months is strongly preferable.

Blue Enchantment performs best with plenty of sunlight.

• Aim for 5–8 hours of sunlight.
• Morning and early afternoon sun are ideal.
• During very hot Gulf weather, provide some afternoon protection.
• Avoid locations where the soil becomes extremely hot.
• Good airflow around the foliage is beneficial.

💧 Watering

Water carefully, especially after planting.

• Water after planting to settle the soil around the roots.
• During establishment, keep the soil lightly and evenly moist.
• Allow the upper soil surface to dry somewhat between watering.
• Increase water during active growth and flowering when conditions are hot and dry.

Avoid heavy clay or areas where irrigation water remains around the rhizome.
