Butterfly Pea is a fast-growing tropical climbing vine known for its stunning deep blue flowers (with white, pink, or double-flowered varieties also available). It is widely grown as an ornamental, medicinal, and edible plant. The flowers are commonly used to make blue herbal tea, natural food coloring, desserts, and beverages. It can climb 2–5 meters, making it ideal for trellises, fences, pergolas, balconies, and garden arches. In the Gulf, Butterfly Pea thrives in warm weather and performs exceptionally well from autumn through late spring.

Best Planting Time

• September to March (recommended)
• Can also be planted in early spring.
• In the Gulf, avoid sowing during peak summer heat unless grown with partial shade and regular irrigation.

Seed Preparation

• Butterfly Pea seeds have a hard seed coat.
• Lightly scarify the seed with sandpaper or gently nick it with a nail clipper (optional but recommended).
• Soak seeds in lukewarm water (25–30°C) for 8–12 hours before sowing.
• No cold stratification is required.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Garden soil
• 30% Compost
• 20% Coco peat
• 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

• 6.0–7.5

Sowing Method

• Sow directly in the garden or in seed trays.
• Plant seeds 1.5–2 cm deep.
• Place 1–2 seeds per hole.
• Transplant seedlings when they have 3–4 true leaves, if started in trays.

• Ideal growing temperature: 22–35°C
• Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
• In extremely hot Gulf summers, light afternoon shade helps reduce heat stress.

Watering

• Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
• Once established, water deeply when the top 3–5 cm of soil becomes dry.
• Butterfly Pea is moderately drought tolerant but flowers best with regular watering.
• Avoid waterlogged soil.
