Sow Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mix and scatter the seeds on the soil surface, as they need light to germinate. Press them lightly but don't cover them with soil.
Germination: Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of 65–70°F (18–21°C). Germination typically takes 10–14 days.
Transplant: Once seedlings are large enough to handle and after the last frost, harden them off and transplant them outdoors. Space plants about 8–10 inches apart.
Sunlight and Care: Dianthus prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowers.
Dianthus Heddewigii 'Chianti' (Black Carnation) produces deep red, almost black flowers with a strong, clove-like fragrance. These are perfect for borders, containers, or cutting gardens, adding bold color and scent to your garden.
