Casaba Melon is a classic heirloom winter melon known for its large oval fruits with a wrinkled golden-yellow rind and sweet, juicy, pale green to creamy-white flesh. Unlike many melons, Casaba has a mild aroma but an exceptionally sweet flavor when fully ripe. It is rich in vitamins A and C, potassium, dietary fiber, folate, and antioxidants. This warm-season crop grows very well in the Gulf when planted during the recommended seasons with full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Best Planting Time

• February to April (recommended for spring harvest)
• August to September (for autumn harvest in suitable Gulf regions)
• Avoid sowing during the coldest winter weeks and peak summer heat.

Seed Preparation

• Soak seeds in lukewarm water (25–30°C) for 6–8 hours before sowing.
• No cold stratification is required.
• Optional: Soak seeds in seaweed extract or a seed-starting solution to improve germination.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, sandy, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Garden soil
• 30% Compost
• 20% Coco peat
• 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

Sowing Method

• Sow seeds directly into the garden or in large containers.
• Plant 2–3 seeds per planting hole.
• Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep.
• After germination, thin to the healthiest seedling.

Watering

• Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.

• Avoid overhead watering to reduce fungal diseases.

Plant Spacing

• 100–150 cm between plants.

Harvesting

• Harvest 90–110 days after sowing.
• Fruits are ready when:
  • The rind turns golden-yellow.
  • The fruit reaches full size.
  • The stem begins to dry.
  • The blossom end softens slightly.
• Casaba melons continue to improve in sweetness for several days after harvest if stored in a cool place.

Fertilization

• Feed with a balanced fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.
• Switch to a fertilizer higher in potassium and phosphorus during flowering and fruit development.

Gulf Climate Tips

• Plant during spring or early autumn for best performance.
• Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture and reduce soil temperature.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen after flowering to encourage fruit development.
• Ensure good air circulation around vines.
