How to Seed Column Stock ‘Mammoth Excelsior Mix’ (Matthiola incana)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors: From October to February, when temperatures range between 15–25°C (59–77°F).

    • Indoors or nursery trays: From December to February for early planting before spring.

    • Avoid sowing from April to September, as high summer heat prevents germination and flowering.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in moist, well-drained soil.
Lightly cover with soil and mist with water to maintain moisture without overwatering.

  3. Soil:
Prefers fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil.
    Ideal Gulf mix: 40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
Avoid heavy clay soils and waterlogging.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Germination temperature: 18–22°C (64–72°F).

    • Requires bright light or full morning sun during growth.

    • In the Gulf, provide shade during the hottest part of the afternoon to prevent heat stress.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–20 days under warm, moist conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • When seedlings reach 8–10 cm tall, transplant them carefully into garden beds or large pots.

    • Space plants 20–25 cm apart for compact, upright growth.

    • Harden seedlings gradually before full exposure to sunlight.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

    • Sunlight: Prefers full morning sun and light afternoon shade for best flowering.

    • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water early morning or evening.

    • Feeding: Use a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks to encourage tall stems and abundant blooms.

    • Maintenance: Remove faded flowers to promote continuous blooming and stronger stems.

    • The ‘Mammoth Excelsior Mix’ produces tall, fragrant spikes of colorful blooms in pink, purple, white, and cream shades — ideal for borders, pots, and cut flower arrangements.

    • Blooms from late winter through early summer in the Gulf.
