How to Seed Cornflower Double ‘Frosty’ Mix (Centaurea cyanus)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors: From October to February, when the weather is mild (15–25°C / 59–77°F).

    • Indoors or nursery trays: From December to February for early transplanting.

    • Avoid sowing from April to September, as high heat and humidity affect germination and flower quality.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds 1 cm deep in moist, well-prepared soil. Cover lightly and press gently.
Cornflowers can be direct-sown in their final location as they dislike root disturbance.

  3. Soil:
Prefers light, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost.
    Ideal Gulf mix: 40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
Avoid heavy clay soil or overwatering.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Germination temperature: 15–20°C (59–68°F).

    • Place in full sun for strong, healthy growth.

    • In the Gulf, provide light afternoon shade during hot days.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate in 7–14 days under mild, moist conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • If sown indoors, transplant seedlings carefully when 8–10 cm tall.

    • Space plants 20–25 cm apart for full, bushy growth.

    • Harden seedlings before moving them outdoors.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

    • Sunlight: Requires full morning sun and light afternoon shade for best color and blooms.

    • Watering: Keep soil moderately moist; water regularly but do not overwater.

    • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks to promote healthy foliage and flowering.

    • Maintenance: Deadhead faded flowers to prolong blooming and encourage new buds.

    • The Cornflower ‘Frosty’ Double Mix produces dense, double blooms in icy shades of white, pale blue, and lavender, perfect for borders, beds, and cut flowers.

    • Blooms from late winter to early summer in Gulf climates.
