Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Candy Stripe’ is a beautiful annual flower with white petals marked by attractive pink or red stripes. It prefers sunny conditions, moderate temperatures, and well-drained soil. In the Gulf, especially Kuwait, it performs best during the cooler growing season because extreme summer heat can reduce flowering and plant vigor.
🌱 Best Growing Season
- Best sowing time: October–January.
- In Kuwait and the hottest Gulf areas, November–December is particularly suitable.
- A second sowing can be made in February if temperatures remain moderate.
- Avoid: June–August and periods of extreme heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–24°C.
🌿 Seed Sowing
- Choose a location with full sun and good drainage.
- Prepare loose, moderately fertile soil. Cosmos does not require extremely rich soil.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Space seeds about 20–30 cm apart for good air circulation.
- Water gently after sowing.
- Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist until germination.
- If starting in trays, transplant seedlings carefully once they have developed several true leaves.
⏱ Germination
- Seeds generally germinate within 7–14 days under suitable conditions.
- Keep the seedbed moist but never waterlogged.
- Provide good light as soon as seedlings emerge.
- Avoid excessive fertilizer during the early stages.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun is best for strong growth and abundant flowers.
- In very hot Gulf weather, provide light afternoon shade to reduce heat stress.
- Soil: Well-drained, light to moderately fertile soil.
- Watering: Water regularly while plants are establishing. Once established, Cosmos is relatively drought tolerant, but regular watering improves flowering.
- Avoid overwatering and poor drainage.
- Fertilizing: Use compost sparingly. Excessive nitrogen can produce tall, leafy plants with fewer flowers.
- Remove weeds around young plants.
- Tall plants may benefit from light support, particularly in windy locations.
🌸 Flowering
- Cosmos ‘Candy Stripe’ generally begins flowering approximately 8–12 weeks after sowing, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
- Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.
- Good sunlight helps maintain compact growth and stronger flowering.
- Allowing some flowers to mature can provide seeds for future planting.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- Autumn sowing is strongly recommended in Kuwait and the hotter Gulf regions.
- Protect young plants from hot, dry winds.
- During unusually warm winter days, provide temporary afternoon shade.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen and heavy irrigation.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Good airflow is important, particularly in humid coastal areas.
- Container-grown Cosmos can be moved to a partially shaded location during unexpected heat waves.
