How to Seed Cucumber ‘Gherkin’ F1 (Cucumis sativus)
-
When to Sow: Sow indoors in spring (April–May), 3–4 weeks before the last frost. In warm regions, sow directly outdoors once the soil is warm and frost-free.
-
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive soil enriched with compost, in a sunny, sheltered location.
-
Sowing: Sow seeds 1–2 cm deep in pots or trays. For outdoor sowing, plant in groups of 2–3 seeds, spaced 45–60 cm apart.
-
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of plants to avoid wet leaves.
-
Germination: Seeds germinate in 7–10 days at 20–25 °C.
-
Transplanting: Harden off indoor seedlings before planting outdoors after the frost has passed.
-
Care: Train plants onto a trellis or netting for better air circulation and easier harvesting. Feed with a potassium-rich fertilizer once flowers begin to form.
-
Harvesting: Pick fruits regularly when young (8–12 cm) to maintain crispness and encourage further production.
✨ Produces crisp, uniform gherkins with excellent flavor, ideal for pickling or enjoying fresh in salads.
