How to Seed Cupflower ‘Purple Robe’ (Nierembergia hippomanica)

  1. Sowing Time:
Sow indoors from February to April, about 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors in May, once the weather is warm and frost-free. In mild climates, seeds can also be sown outdoors in April–May.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and press gently. Do not cover, as light is required for germination.

  3. Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Ideal for loamy or sandy soil with good drainage.

  4. Light & Temperature:
Place in a bright, warm location with temperatures around 20–24 °C (68–75 °F). Avoid direct, strong sunlight during germination.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate within 14–21 days in warm, moist, and well-lit conditions.

  6. Transplanting:
When seedlings are strong enough to handle, transplant them outdoors, spacing 20–25 cm apart in sunny borders, hanging baskets, or containers.

  7. Growing Tips:

    • Keep soil consistently moist but well-drained.

    • Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot for best flowering.

    • Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

    • The ‘Purple Robe’ variety produces lavender-purple cup-shaped flowers with a golden center, ideal for containers, edging, and hanging baskets.

    • Blooms continuously from late spring to autumn, attracting bees and pollinators.
