Curly-leaved Cress is a very fast-growing cool-season herb that is particularly suitable for autumn, winter, and early spring cultivation in the Gulf. It can be harvested as baby greens within a few weeks. High temperatures can cause rapid flowering and reduce leaf quality.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Best sowing period in the Gulf: September–April.
- Best period in Kuwait: October–February.
- For continuous production, sow a small batch every 1–2 weeks.
- Avoid sowing outdoors during May–August, especially in extreme heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 10–20°C.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a fine, fertile, moisture-retentive and well-drained growing medium.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep or lightly scatter them over the surface and cover very thinly.
- If growing for baby leaves, seeds can be sown relatively close together.
- Gently mist with water after sowing.
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Place the container or seed tray in a bright location with good light.
- Once seedlings emerge, provide good airflow.
- For larger plants, thin seedlings to approximately 5–10 cm apart.
⏱ Germination
- Cress is very quick to germinate, usually within 2–5 days.
- Keep the seedbed evenly moist during germination.
- Avoid strong watering that can disturb the small seeds.
- Germination is generally better under cool to mild conditions.
🌱 Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- In the Gulf, provide morning sun with afternoon shade as temperatures increase.
- Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well drained.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist.
- Cress has shallow roots and can dry out quickly, particularly in containers.
- Avoid allowing the growing medium to become completely dry.
- Avoid standing water.
- Fertilizing: Usually requires little fertilizer because of its short growing period. Compost or a mild balanced fertilizer is sufficient if needed.
🌿 Harvesting
- Baby leaves: approximately 7–14 days after sowing.
- Larger leaves: approximately 2–4 weeks after sowing.
- Cut the leaves just above soil level or harvest individual leaves as required.
- For the freshest flavor, harvest in the morning.
- Succession sowing provides a continuous supply.
🌸 Preventing Early Flowering
- High temperatures encourage cress to bolt and flower quickly.
- Grow during the cooler months.
- Provide afternoon shade when temperatures begin rising.
- Maintain consistent moisture.
- Harvest frequently.
- Sow new batches regularly rather than keeping mature plants for too long.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- Curly-leaved Cress is especially suitable for winter cultivation in Kuwait.
- During mild weather, it can be grown in full sun.
- As temperatures rise, provide approximately 30–50% afternoon shade.
- Container cultivation is ideal because cress has a short growing cycle and can be moved easily.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- A light mulch can help reduce moisture loss.
- Avoid wet foliage overnight where possible, particularly in humid coastal areas.
- Because it matures quickly, it is excellent for succession planting.
Tip: For a continuous supply of fresh Curly-leaved Cress in Kuwait, sow small amounts every 7–14 days from October through February.
