Dahlia (Dahlia spp.) is a beautiful flowering plant with a wide range of flower colors and forms. Dahlias grow best in mild temperatures, fertile well-drained soil, and plenty of sunlight. In the Gulf, especially Kuwait, growing from seed is best timed for the cooler season, while protecting young plants from extreme heat.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Best sowing period: October–January.
  • Best period in Kuwait: November–December.
  • A second sowing can be made in January–February if temperatures remain moderate.
  • Avoid: May–September and periods of extreme summer heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–24°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

  1. Use a light, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with fine growing medium.
  4. Water gently using a fine spray.
  5. Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Place seed trays in a bright location with gentle morning sunlight.
  7. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them carefully.
  8. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart, depending on the variety's mature size.

⏱ Germination

  • Seeds generally germinate within 7–14 days under suitable conditions.
  • Keep the seed-starting medium moderately moist.
  • Provide good light after emergence to prevent weak, elongated seedlings.
  • Ensure good airflow around young plants.

🌱 Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light afternoon shade.
  • In the Gulf, morning sun with protection from intense afternoon heat is beneficial.
  • Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and very well drained.
  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment and active growth.
  • Keep moisture consistent, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Fertilizing: Add compost before planting and use a balanced fertilizer during early growth. A fertilizer with adequate potassium can support flowering.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce excessive foliage and fewer flowers.
  • Mulch around established plants to help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.
  • Tall varieties may need staking or support.

🌸 Flowering & Maintenance

  • Dahlias grown from seed can begin flowering in approximately 3–5 months, depending on variety and growing conditions.
  • Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage additional blooms.
  • Pinching the growing tip when young can encourage a bushier plant with more flowering stems.
  • For larger flowers, remove some side buds while leaving the strongest main bud.
  • Protect flowers from strong winds and extreme heat.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Cool-season cultivation is strongly recommended in Kuwait and the hotter Gulf regions.
  • November and December are particularly suitable for starting seeds.
  • Protect seedlings from hot, dry winds.
  • During warm spells, provide 30–50% afternoon shade.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • Drip irrigation is useful for established plants.
  • Avoid prolonged wet foliage, particularly overnight.
  • Container-grown dahlias can be moved to a cooler, partially shaded location during heat waves.
  • Extreme summer heat may stop flowering or cause plants to decline, so plan the main flowering period for the cooler months.
