Dahlia ‘Moonfire’ prefers mild temperatures and good sunlight. In the Gulf, it is best started during the cooler season. The intense summer heat can severely reduce flowering and stress the plants.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Gulf: October–January.
- Kuwait: October–November is the best period for starting seeds.
- A second suitable period is January–February if temperatures remain mild.
- Avoid outdoor sowing during May–September because of extreme heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Fill seed trays or small pots and moisten the medium before sowing.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine growing medium.
- Water gently using a fine spray.
- Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a bright location with mild temperatures.
- Germination normally takes approximately 7–14 days.
🌱 Transplanting
- Transplant seedlings after they develop 2–3 sets of true leaves.
- Harden seedlings gradually for about 7 days before planting outdoors.
- Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart.
- Choose a location with good airflow and well-drained soil.
- Handle the roots carefully during transplanting.
☀️ Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade.
- In the Gulf, provide morning sun and some afternoon shade as temperatures rise.
- Soil: Fertile, rich in organic matter, loose, and well drained.
- Water: Keep the soil moderately moist. Water deeply when the surface begins to dry.
- Avoid both drought stress and waterlogging.
- Fertilizer: Add compost before planting and use a balanced or flowering fertilizer during active growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce lush foliage with fewer flowers.
🌸 Flowering & Maintenance
- Dahlias grown from seed can begin flowering approximately 12–16 weeks after sowing, depending on conditions.
- Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage more blooms.
- Pinch the growing tip when plants are approximately 15–20 cm tall to encourage branching and more flower stems.
- Provide support if plants become tall or exposed to wind.
- Remove damaged or diseased foliage promptly.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- In Kuwait, October–November is the preferred time to start Dahlia ‘Moonfire’.
- Protect plants from intense afternoon sun when temperatures rise.
- During warmer weather, 30–50% afternoon shade can help extend flowering.
- Avoid planting in locations that remain extremely hot against walls or paved surfaces.
- Good drainage is essential, especially after heavy irrigation.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- A layer of mulch around the root zone can help reduce soil temperature and conserve moisture.
- If temperatures become extremely high, flowering may temporarily decline.
Tip: For the best results in Kuwait, start Dahlia ‘Moonfire’ from seed in October–November and aim to grow it through the mild winter and spring season, before the extreme summer heat arrives.
