Dahlia ‘Sunny Reggae’ is a colorful dahlia variety valued for its warm, vibrant flowers. Like other dahlias, it performs best in mild temperatures, fertile well-drained soil, and plenty of sunlight. In the Gulf, especially Kuwait, grow it during the cooler season and protect young plants from extreme heat.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Best sowing period: October–January.
  • Best period in Kuwait and very hot Gulf areas: November–December.
  • A second sowing can be attempted in February if temperatures remain moderate.
  • Avoid: June–August and periods of extreme heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C.

🌿 How to Sow the Seeds

  1. Use a light, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with a fine layer of growing medium.
  4. Water gently with a fine spray.
  5. Keep the medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
  6. Place seed trays in a bright location protected from intense afternoon heat.
  7. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them carefully.
  8. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm apart.

⏱ Germination

  • Seeds generally germinate within 1–3 weeks under suitable conditions.
  • Maintain moderate moisture during germination.
  • Provide good light and airflow after emergence.
  • Avoid excessive watering, which can cause young seedlings to rot.

🌱 Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light afternoon shade.
  • In the Gulf, morning sun with afternoon protection is helpful when temperatures rise.
  • Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and very well drained.
  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment and active growth.
  • Keep moisture consistent, but do not allow roots to remain in standing water.
  • Fertilizing: Add compost before planting and use a balanced fertilizer during vegetative growth. A flowering fertilizer can be used when buds begin to form.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.
  • Apply mulch around the plant to conserve moisture and reduce soil temperature.
  • Provide support if the plant becomes tall or is exposed to strong Gulf winds.

🌸 Flowering & Maintenance

  • Flowering time varies according to temperature, light, and growing conditions.
  • Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage additional blooms.
  • Good sunlight and balanced nutrition help produce stronger stems and better flowers.
  • Avoid severe heat stress during flowering.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • Autumn and winter sowing is recommended in Kuwait and the hotter Gulf regions.
  • Protect seedlings from hot, dry winds.
  • During unusually hot weather, use 30–50% afternoon shade.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • Drip irrigation is useful for maintaining consistent moisture.
  • Avoid overhead watering late in the evening.
  • Container-grown plants can be moved to a cooler, partially shaded location during heat waves.
  • If summer temperatures become extreme, flowering may decline; continue basic plant care and resume stronger growth when temperatures moderate.
