1. Environment and Climate Control
The primary challenge in the Gulf area is managing high heat and maintaining specific humidity.
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Use a green shade net (around 50-60% shade) or place them near an east-facing window indoors to avoid harsh midday sun which can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: Maintain a day temperature range of 24°C to 32°C (75°F to 90°F), with a distinct night-time drop to 11°C to 22°C (52°F to 72°F) to encourage blooming.
- Humidity: Aim for high humidity, between 60% and 85%. Use a humidity tray (a tray with pebbles and water) or mist the plants frequently, especially in dry conditions.
- Air Circulation: Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues, which are common in high humidity environments.
2. Potting and Media
- Pot: Use small, well-draining pots, as these orchids prefer slightly restricted roots. Perforated plastic or clay pots are ideal.
- Medium: Use a specialized, very coarse, well-draining orchid mix (not regular soil) such as a mix of fir bark, perlite, charcoal pieces, and/or coconut husk/fiber.
3. Watering and Feeding
- Watering: Water thoroughly in the morning during the active growing season (spring and summer), but allow the potting medium to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering significantly during the winter rest period.
- Water Quality: Use rainwater or filtered water if tap water has high levels of mineral salts or chlorine.
- Fertilizing: During the active growing season, feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20 NPK) diluted to half strength every 1 to 2 weeks. Withhold fertilizer completely during the winter rest period.
