100 Seeds
Dill is a fast-growing annual herb valued for its aromatic leaves and flavorful seeds. Its feathery green foliage is widely used in salads, soups, seafood dishes, pickles, and traditional Middle Eastern cuisine. Both the leaves (dill weed) and seeds are edible. Dill grows best during the cool season in the Gulf region and is ideal for gardens, raised beds, containers, and hydroponic systems.
Best Planting Time
- October to February (recommended)
- Can also be grown from late September to early March in cooler Gulf regions.
- Avoid planting during the hot summer months.
Seed Preparation
- Seeds do not require soaking.
- For faster germination, seeds may be soaked in lukewarm water for 4–6 hours (optional).
- No cold stratification is required.
Soil Preparation
Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Recommended mix:
- 40% Coco peat
- 30% Compost
- 20% Garden soil
- 10% Perlite
Ideal soil pH:
- 6.0–7.5
Sowing Method
- Sow seeds directly where they will grow, as dill develops a long taproot and does not transplant well.
- Plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with soil.
- Keep the soil evenly moist until germination.
Temperature & Light
- Ideal germination temperature: 15–25°C
- Ideal growing temperature: 15–28°C
- Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- In warmer Gulf weather, provide light afternoon shade.
Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist during germination.
- Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil becomes dry.
- Avoid waterlogging.
Germination Time
- 7–14 days
Plant Spacing
- Thin seedlings to:
- 20–30 cm between plants
- Space rows:
- 30–40 cm apart
Harvesting
- Harvest leaves:
- 35–50 days after sowing
- Harvest seeds:
- 90–120 days after sowing, once flower heads turn brown.
- Harvest leaves regularly before flowering for the best flavor.
Gulf Climate Tips
- Sow during the cooler months for the highest-quality leaves.
- Successive sowings every 2–3 weeks provide a continuous harvest.
- Avoid disturbing the roots after germination.
- Feed monthly with a balanced organic fertilizer.
- Dill grows very well in containers, raised beds, hydroponic systems, and greenhouse gardens.
