How to Seed Dwarf Blanket Flower Mix (Gaillardia aristata nana)

  1. Best Time to Sow (Gulf Region):

    • Outdoors: From October to February, when daytime temperatures range between 15–28°C (59–82°F).

    • Indoors or shaded nursery: From December to February for early transplanting.

    • Avoid sowing during hot months (April–September) as extreme heat reduces germination and weakens growth.

  2. Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep in moist soil. Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite and press gently.

  3. Soil:
Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil enriched with organic matter.
    Ideal Gulf mix: 40% garden soil + 30% peat moss + 20% perlite + 10% compost.
Blanket flowers dislike soggy soil — good drainage is essential.

  4. Light & Temperature:

    • Ideal germination temperature: 20–25°C (68–77°F).

    • Place trays in a bright area with indirect light until germination.

    • After sprouting, move seedlings to a sunny, well-ventilated location.

  5. Germination Time:
Seeds germinate in 10–20 days in warm, bright, and slightly dry conditions.

  6. Transplanting:

    • When seedlings reach 5–8 cm tall, transplant outdoors or into pots.

    • Space plants 25–30 cm apart for healthy growth and airflow.

    • Choose full sun areas for best flowering performance.

  7. Growing Tips for Gulf Climate:

    • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun, tolerating strong Gulf light once established.

    • Watering: Water moderately; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering in humid conditions.

    • Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth.

    • Maintenance: Deadhead faded blooms to encourage continuous flowering.

    • The Dwarf Blanket Flower Mix produces compact plants (20–30 cm tall) with vibrant red, orange, and yellow daisy-like blooms.

    • Extremely heat- and drought-tolerant, making it ideal for Gulf gardens, pots, and borders.

    • Blooms from late winter to early summer in Gulf climates.
