How to Seed Dwarf Heliotrope ‘Marine’ (Heliotropium arborescens)
-
Sowing Time:
Sow seeds indoors from February to April, about 8–10 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors when temperatures remain above 10 °C (50 °F) at night. -
Sowing Depth:
Sow seeds on the surface of moist seed compost and press lightly. Do not cover, as light helps germination. -
Soil:
Use fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Heliotrope prefers loamy or sandy soil that retains moisture but drains well. -
Light & Temperature:
Place the tray in a bright, warm location with temperatures between 20–24 °C (68–75 °F). Maintain good air circulation. -
Germination Time:
Seeds usually germinate in 21–30 days, sometimes longer if temperatures fluctuate. -
Transplanting:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots. Harden off gradually before planting outdoors, spacing 25–30 cm apart in full sun or light shade. -
Growing Tips:
-
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
-
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during growth.
-
Remove faded blooms to encourage new flower clusters.
-
The ‘Marine’ variety produces compact plants with rich violet-blue, fragrant flower clusters, perfect for pots, borders, and balcony gardens.
-
Blooms from late spring to autumn, attracting butterflies and pollinators.
