Dwarf Pea 'Piccolo Provenzale' is a compact, early-maturing heirloom pea variety that produces sweet, tender green peas on short plants. It is ideal for vegetable gardens, raised beds, containers, and small spaces, and usually requires little or no staking. In the Gulf region, it performs best during the cool season.
Best Planting Time
- October to January (recommended)
- Sow every 2–3 weeks for a continuous harvest.
- Avoid sowing during warm or hot weather.
Seed Preparation
- Soak seeds in clean water for 6–8 hours before sowing to speed germination (optional).
- Use fresh, high-quality seeds.
- No cold stratification is required.
Soil Preparation
Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Recommended mix:
- 40% Garden soil
- 30% Well-rotted compost
- 20% Coco peat
- 10% Perlite or coarse sand
Ideal soil pH:
- 6.0–7.5
Sowing Method
- Sow seeds directly into the garden, as peas dislike transplanting.
- Plant seeds 3–4 cm deep.
- Space seeds 5–8 cm apart.
- Keep the soil evenly moist until germination.
Temperature & Light
- Ideal germination temperature: 10–22°C
- Ideal growing temperature: 15–24°C
- Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- In warmer Gulf areas, light afternoon shade can extend the harvest.
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist during germination.
- After establishment, water when the top 2–3 cm of soil becomes dry.
- Increase watering slightly during flowering and pod development.
- Avoid waterlogged soil.
Germination Time
- 7–14 days
Plant Spacing
- 5–8 cm between plants.
- 30–40 cm between rows.
Harvest
- Harvest pods about 60–70 days after sowing.
- Pick pods regularly while they are full but still tender.
- Frequent harvesting encourages continued production.
Fertilization
- Mix compost into the soil before sowing.
- Peas usually require little fertilizer.
- If needed, apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer once during early growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes leaves instead of pods.
Gulf Climate Tips
- Grow only during the cool season.
- Water early in the morning.
- Apply mulch to conserve soil moisture.
- Ensure good air circulation.
- Short plants generally need little support, but light staking may help if heavily loaded with pods.
- Monitor for aphids, powdery mildew, root rot, and caterpillars.
- Dwarf Pea 'Piccolo Provenzale' is ideal for home gardens, raised beds, containers, balconies, and school gardens throughout the Gulf.
