Hestia is a compact dwarf runner bean that grows only 40–50 cm tall, making it ideal for containers, raised beds, balconies, and small gardens. It produces striking red-and-white flowers followed by tender green pods. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the young pods are excellent for fresh cooking.
Best Planting Time
- October to February (recommended)
- In the warmest Gulf areas, the best results are obtained from November to January.
- Avoid sowing during the hot summer months.
Seed Preparation
- No soaking is required.
- Optional: Soak seeds in lukewarm water (20–25°C) for 4–6 hours before sowing to speed germination.
- No cold stratification is needed.
Soil Preparation
Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
Recommended mix:
- 40% Garden soil
- 30% Compost
- 20% Coco peat
- 10% Perlite or coarse sand
Ideal soil pH:
- 6.0–7.0
Sowing Method
- Sow seeds directly into their final growing position.
- Plant seeds 3–5 cm deep.
- Place 1 seed per hole.
- Because Hestia is dwarf, a trellis is usually unnecessary, although a short stake can support heavily loaded plants.
Temperature & Light
- Ideal germination temperature: 18–25°C
- Ideal growing temperature: 18–28°C
- Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- In warmer Gulf areas, light afternoon shade helps extend production.
Watering
- Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
- Water deeply whenever the top 3–4 cm of soil becomes dry.
- Increase watering during flowering and pod development.
- Avoid waterlogged soil.
Germination Time
- 7–14 days
Plant Spacing
- 25–30 cm between plants.
- 45–60 cm between rows.
Harvesting
- Harvest young pods 60–75 days after sowing.
- Pick pods regularly while they are tender to encourage continuous production.
- Flowers are also attractive to pollinators throughout the season.
Fertilization
- Mix compost into the soil before planting.
- Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it promotes leafy growth instead of flowers and pods.
Gulf Climate Tips
- Grow only during the cool season.
- Mulch around plants to conserve moisture.
- Water early in the morning.
- Ensure good air circulation.
- Monitor for aphids, spider mites, bean beetles, whiteflies, powdery mildew, and rust.
- Hestia is excellent for containers, patios, balconies, raised beds, and small vegetable gardens throughout the Gulf.
