Dwarf Tom Thumb Pea is a compact heirloom pea variety that grows only 20–30 cm tall, making it perfect for small gardens, raised beds, pots, window boxes, and balconies. It produces sweet, tender green pods and usually does not require a trellis, although light support can improve growth and harvesting. It is well suited to the Gulf when grown during the cool season.

Best Planting Time

  • October to January (recommended)
  • Can also be sown in early February in cooler Gulf regions.
  • Avoid planting during warm spring and summer weather.

Seed Preparation

  • No soaking is necessary.
  • Optional: Soak seeds in lukewarm water (20–25°C) for 4–6 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
  • No cold stratification is required.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% Garden soil
  • 30% Compost
  • 20% Coco peat
  • 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

  • 6.0–7.5

Sowing Method

  • Sow seeds directly where they will grow.
  • Plant seeds 2–3 cm deep.
  • Space seeds 5–8 cm apart.
  • Thin seedlings if necessary after germination.

Temperature & Light

  • Ideal germination temperature: 12–22°C
  • Ideal growing temperature: 15–24°C
  • Requires 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • In warmer Gulf areas, morning sun with light afternoon shade is beneficial toward the end of the season.

Watering

  • Keep the soil evenly moist during germination.
  • Water regularly, allowing the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Increase watering during flowering and pod formation.
  • Avoid waterlogging.

Germination Time

  • 7–14 days

Plant Spacing

  • 5–8 cm between plants.
  • 30–40 cm between rows.

Harvesting

  • Harvest approximately 55–70 days after sowing.
  • Pick pods while they are young, bright green, and well-filled for the sweetest flavor.
  • Frequent harvesting encourages continued production.

Fertilization

  • Mix compost into the soil before planting.
  • Since peas fix nitrogen, apply only light amounts of balanced fertilizer if needed.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which encourages leaves instead of pods.

Gulf Climate Tips

  • Plant only during the cool season.
  • Mulch around plants to maintain cool soil and conserve moisture.
  • Good air circulation helps prevent fungal diseases.
  • Water early in the morning.
  • Monitor for aphids, thrips, powdery mildew, and root rot.
  • Dwarf Tom Thumb is excellent for containers, raised beds, balcony gardens, children's gardens, and small vegetable plots throughout the Gulf.
