The Erguvan Tree (Cercis siliquastrum), also known as the Judas Tree or Mediterranean Redbud, is an ornamental deciduous tree famous for its spectacular pink-purple blossoms in early spring. It is native to the Mediterranean region and can grow in the Gulf, although young trees should be protected from extreme summer heat. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.

• Plant during the coolest months of the year.

Seed Preparation

Erguvan seeds have a hard seed coat and require scarification and cold stratification.

1. Soak seeds in hot (not boiling) water (70–80°C) and allow them to cool for 12–24 hours.
2. Place seeds in moist peat moss or vermiculite.
3. Refrigerate at 2–5°C for 6–8 weeks.
4. Sow immediately after stratification.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, well-drained soil.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Garden soil
• 30% Compost
• 20% Coco peat
• 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

• 6.5–7.8

Sowing Method

• Sow in seed trays or deep nursery pots.
• Plant seeds:

• Keep soil lightly moist but never waterlogged.

• Requires:

Watering

• Keep soil evenly moist during germination.
• Water deeply once or twice per week after establishment.
• Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Transplanting

• Transplant seedlings when they reach:
  • 20–30 cm tall
• Space trees:
  • 4–6 meters apart.

Gulf Climate Tips

• Plant where the tree receives morning sun and afternoon shade during the first few years.
• Apply organic mulch to keep roots cool and conserve moisture.
• Protect young trees from temperatures above 42°C.
• Water regularly during the first 2–3 years until well established.
• Once mature, the tree is moderately drought tolerant.
