How to Seed Fennel Bulb ‘Florence’ (Foeniculum vulgare)
-
When to Sow: Sow outdoors from late spring to mid-summer after the soil has warmed and frost risk has passed. For autumn harvests, sow in late summer.
-
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost, in a sunny position.
-
Sowing: Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in rows. Space rows 30–40 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 20–25 cm apart.
-
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Dry soil may cause bolting.
-
Germination: Seeds sprout in 10–14 days at 15–20 °C.
-
Care: Weed regularly, water during dry spells, and mulch to conserve moisture.
-
Harvesting: Bulbs are ready in about 80–100 days. Cut when swollen to 7–10 cm across, before they become tough.
✨ Produces crisp, aromatic white bulbs with a sweet anise flavor. Delicious raw in salads, roasted, or grilled.
