Firethorn (Pyracantha) is an evergreen to semi-evergreen ornamental shrub valued for its glossy foliage, fragrant white spring flowers, and bright red, orange, or yellow berries. It is commonly used as a hedge due to its thorny branches. Firethorn can be grown successfully in the Gulf if planted during the cool season and provided with afternoon shade during the hottest months.

Best Planting Time

• November to February (recommended)
• Plant during the coolest months for strong root establishment.

Seed Preparation

Firethorn seeds require cold stratification to improve germination.

1. Remove all fruit pulp from the seeds.
2. Wash the seeds thoroughly.
3. Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours.
4. Mix seeds with moist peat moss or vermiculite.
5. Refrigerate at 2–5°C for 8–12 weeks.
6. Sow immediately after stratification.

Soil Preparation

Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

Recommended mix:

• 40% Garden soil
• 30% Compost
• 20% Coco peat
• 10% Perlite or coarse sand

Ideal soil pH:

• 6.0–7.5

Sowing Method

• Sow in seed trays or nursery pots.
• Plant seeds:
  • 0.5–1 cm deep
• Cover lightly with fine soil.
• Keep the growing medium evenly moist.

• Requires:
  • Full sun to partial shade
• In the Gulf, morning sun with afternoon shade is recommended.

Watering

• Keep soil consistently moist during germination.
• Water deeply 1–2 times per week after establishment.
• Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
• Avoid waterlogged soil.

• Seeds usually germinate within:
  • 30–90 days after cold stratification.

Transplanting

• Transplant seedlings when they reach:
  • 15–20 cm tall
• Space plants:
  • 1.5–2.5 meters apart, depending on whether they are grown as hedges or specimen shrubs.

Flowering & Fruiting

• Seed-grown plants usually flower and produce berries after:
  • 3–5 years
• Bright berries appear from autumn through winter.
