Freesia Mix

Freesia is a beautiful, sweetly scented flowering plant grown from small, bulb-like corms. A Freesia Mix can produce flowers in several colors, commonly including white, yellow, pink, red, orange, purple and mauve, depending on the mixture.

Plants usually produce narrow, sword-like leaves and slender arching flower stems. Freesias are excellent for containers, borders and especially cut flowers because of their attractive fragrance and long-lasting blooms.

🌱 Best Planting Time

For the Gulf climate, plant Freesia corms during the cooler months.

• Gulf region: September–February
• Kuwait: October–January
• Best period in Kuwait: October–December
• UAE & Qatar: October–February
• Saudi Arabia & Bahrain: October–February
• Oman: September–February

Avoid planting during the hottest part of summer. Freesias prefer cool growing conditions, and excessive heat can cause weak, stretched growth and poor-quality flowers.

🌿 How to Plant the Corms

1. Choose firm, healthy corms without mold or soft spots.
2. Use loose, fertile and very well-drained soil.
3. Plant the corms with the pointed growing end facing upward.
4. Plant approximately 5–8 cm deep. Some Freesia cultivars are successfully grown around 8 cm deep, so the exact depth can vary slightly by corm size.
5. Space corms about 5–10 cm apart.
6. Cover gently with soil and water lightly.
7. Make sure excess water drains away completely.

For containers, use a deep pot with drainage holes. Freesias perform particularly well in containers filled with free-draining potting mix and grit/perlite.

🌡️ Sprouting

Freesia corms develop roots first and then produce narrow green shoots. Keep the soil lightly moist during establishment but never saturated.

Cooler conditions are especially important. Freesias can suffer when growing temperatures become too high; temperatures above about 15°C can lead to weaker, elongated growth and faster-fading flowers, particularly when temperatures fluctuate. In the Gulf, therefore, choose the coolest available growing location and protect plants from intense afternoon heat.

🌱 Early Plant Care

• Provide good airflow around the plants.
• Water gently while the shoots are developing.
• Do not allow the corms to remain in wet soil.
• Thin overcrowded plants if necessary.
• Flower stems may need light support, especially in windy locations.

🌿 Spacing

For a fuller display, plant several corms together:

• Garden: 5–10 cm apart
• Containers: around 5–8 cm apart
• Use a wider/deeper container when planting a larger group.

☀️ Sunlight

Freesia prefers bright light and full sun, but Gulf afternoon temperatures can be too intense.

For Kuwait and other very hot Gulf areas:

• Give plants strong morning sunlight.
• Provide light afternoon shade during hot periods.
• Avoid placing containers directly on extremely hot concrete, metal or reflective surfaces.
• Good ventilation is important.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist while the plant is actively growing, but never waterlogged.

• Water when the upper soil begins to dry.
• Increase watering during active growth and flowering if the weather is dry.
• Reduce watering after flowering as the foliage begins to yellow.
• When the plant becomes dormant, the corms should be kept dry.

🌱 Soil

Use a loose, fertile and fast-draining mix.

A suitable container mix can contain:

• Quality potting soil
• Mature compost
• Perlite or pumice
• Coarse sand or horticultural grit

Excellent drainage is particularly important in the Gulf to reduce the risk of corm rot.

🌿 Fertilizing

Once the plants are actively growing, use a light balanced fertilizer. During flowering, a fertilizer with adequate potassium can help support flowering.

Avoid excessive nitrogen because it can encourage foliage at the expense of strong flowering.

🌸 Flowering

Freesia produces attractive funnel-shaped, strongly scented flowers in succession along slender stems. A Freesia Mix can provide a colorful combination of flowers, depending on the cultivar mixture.

Remove faded flowers if you do not want seed production. This helps the plant direct energy toward the corm.

• Kuwait: October–December is an excellent starting period.
