100 Seeds

Chervil, known in Turkish as Frenk Maydanozu, is a delicate annual herb from the parsley family. It has soft, fern-like leaves with a mild flavor reminiscent of parsley, anise, and licorice. Chervil is rich in vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants. It is widely used in French cuisine for soups, salads, egg dishes, fish, poultry, sauces, and herb blends. Since Chervil is a cool-season herb, it grows best in the Gulf during autumn and winter and is ideal for containers, raised beds, home gardens, and hydroponic systems.

Best Planting Time

  • October to February (recommended)
  • Best growth occurs from November to January.
  • Avoid planting during the hot summer months.

Seed Preparation

  • Chervil seeds lose viability quickly, so use fresh seeds whenever possible.
  • No soaking or cold stratification is required.
  • Sow seeds directly after opening the seed packet.

Soil Preparation

Use loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% Coco peat
  • 30% Compost
  • 20% Garden soil
  • 10% Perlite

Ideal soil pH:

  • 6.0–7.0

Sowing Method

  • Chervil does not transplant well, so direct sowing is recommended.
  • Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep.
  • Space seeds 2–3 cm apart.
  • Thin seedlings later to the recommended spacing.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist until germination.

Temperature & Light

  • Ideal germination temperature: 15–20°C
  • Ideal growing temperature: 12–24°C
  • Requires 3–5 hours of morning sunlight or bright partial shade.
  • Protect plants from strong afternoon sun.

Watering

  • Keep the soil consistently moist.
  • Water whenever the top 1–2 cm of soil begins to dry.
  • Avoid waterlogging while preventing the soil from drying out completely.

Germination Time

  • 10–21 days

Plant Spacing

After thinning:

  • 20–25 cm between plants.
  • 25–30 cm between rows.

Harvesting

  • Begin harvesting:
    • 40–60 days after sowing.
  • Harvest young leaves regularly before flowering for the best flavor.
  • Frequent harvesting encourages fresh leaf production.

Hydroponic Growing

  • Performs very well in NFT, DWC, Kratky, and vertical hydroponic systems.
  • Maintain:
    • pH: 6.0–6.8
    • EC: 1.0–1.6 mS/cm

Gulf Climate Tips

  • Plant only during the cool season.
  • Use 30–50% shade cloth if temperatures rise above 28°C.
  • Apply organic mulch to keep roots cool.
  • Fertilize every 2–3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Chervil bolts quickly in hot weather, so harvest leaves regularly before flowering.
  • Chervil grows exceptionally well in containers, raised beds, hydroponic systems, balconies, and home gardens throughout the Gulf.
