Garden Thyme is a hardy, aromatic perennial herb that prefers plenty of sunlight, moderate watering, and very well-drained soil. In the Gulf, it is best established during the cooler months and protected from extreme summer heat while young.

🌱 Best Growing Season

• Best sowing time: October–December.
• In milder Gulf areas, seeds can also be sown during January–February.
• Avoid: Peak summer, especially June–August.
• Ideal germination temperature: 18–24°C.

🌿 Seed Sowing

1. Choose a sunny location with excellent drainage.
2. Sow seeds in seed trays, small pots, or directly into the garden.
3. Scatter the small seeds over the surface of the soil.
4. Press them gently into the soil or cover with only a very thin layer of fine soil.
5. Do not bury Garden Thyme seeds deeply.
6. Once established, space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.
7. Water gently with a fine spray to avoid moving the seeds.
8. Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist until germination.

⏱ Germination

• Seeds generally germinate within 14–21 days, although some may take longer.
• Keep the growing medium lightly moist rather than wet.
• Provide bright light and good airflow after seedlings emerge.

🌱 Growing & Care

• Sunlight: Full sun, ideally 6–8 hours daily.
• Soil: Light, sandy or loamy, and very well drained. Improve heavy soil with coarse sand or other drainage material.
• Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Garden Thyme is relatively drought tolerant.
• Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
• Fertilizing: Add a small amount of compost before planting. Heavy fertilization is usually unnecessary.
• Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce soft growth and reduce the intensity of the herb's aroma.
• Good air circulation is particularly important in humid coastal Gulf areas.

• Begin harvesting once the plants are well established and have sufficient leafy growth.
• Harvest young stems and leaves as needed.
• Morning harvesting is ideal for maintaining good aroma.
• Avoid removing more than approximately one-third of the plant at a time.
• Regular light pruning encourages compact, bushy growth.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

• The cooler autumn and winter months are the best period for starting Garden Thyme from seed.
• In Kuwait and other very hot Gulf regions, November–January is particularly suitable.
• Provide afternoon shade when temperatures become extreme.
• Use a light layer of gravel or mulch around established plants to improve drainage and reduce evaporation.
• Drip irrigation is recommended, but avoid frequent excessive watering.
• Protect young seedlings from hot, dry winds.
• In humid coastal areas, prioritize excellent drainage and airflow.
