10 Seeds
Gazania is well suited to Gulf conditions because it tolerates strong sunlight, heat, and relatively dry conditions once established. The main challenge is protecting young seedlings from extreme summer heat and excessive moisture.
🇬🇧 English
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Gulf: September–November and February–March.
- Kuwait: October–November is the preferred sowing period.
- A second suitable period is February–March.
- Avoid sowing during the extreme summer heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 18–22°C.
🌿 How to Sow the Seeds
- Use a light, sandy or gritty, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
- Sow seeds approximately 0.3–0.5 cm deep.
- Cover lightly with fine soil or vermiculite.
- Water gently with a fine spray.
- Keep the medium slightly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place the seed tray in a bright location with good airflow.
- Germination generally takes around 7–21 days.
- Once seedlings emerge, gradually increase their exposure to sunlight.
🌱 Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings have developed 3–4 true leaves.
- Harden seedlings for about 7–10 days before planting outdoors.
- Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart.
- Choose a sunny location with excellent drainage.
- Avoid planting in areas where water collects after irrigation.
☀️ Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun is ideal.
- Gazania flowers best with plenty of direct sunlight.
- In the Gulf, provide morning sun and light afternoon shade during periods of extreme heat.
- Soil: Sandy, gritty, light, and very well drained.
- Water: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, allow the soil to dry between watering.
- Avoid frequent shallow watering and prolonged wet soil.
- Reduce watering during cooler or humid periods.
- Feed lightly with a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage foliage rather than flowers.
- Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming.
🌸 Flowering
- ‘Sunny Side Up’ may begin flowering approximately 10–14 weeks after sowing, depending on temperature and growing conditions.
- The bright yellow flowers open best in strong sunlight and may close during cloudy conditions or at night.
- In the Gulf, plants can provide attractive flowering during the cooler season.
- Regular deadheading can encourage additional blooms.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- In Kuwait, October–November is the best period to start seeds.
- Give young plants plenty of winter sunlight.
- During hot spring weather, provide approximately 30–40% afternoon shade if necessary.
- Protect seedlings from hot, dry winds.
- Excellent drainage is essential, particularly in humid coastal areas.
- Avoid overwatering.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Gazania is relatively drought tolerant once established.
- During extreme summer heat, flowering may decrease considerably.
- If summer conditions become too severe, grow Gazania in containers where plants can receive afternoon protection.
Tip: Gazania ‘Sunny Side Up’ is one of the more Gulf-friendly flowering plants. Give it plenty of sunlight, sandy well-drained soil, and moderate watering. For Kuwait, starting seeds in October–November is recommended for strong cool-season growth and flowering.
