Giant Floral Ipomoea ‘Blue Picotee’ is well suited to warm conditions and can grow vigorously in the Gulf. For the best results, sow during the milder months and protect young plants from extreme summer heat.
🌱 Best Sowing Time
- Gulf: September–April.
- Kuwait: October–November is an excellent sowing period.
- A second good window is February–March.
- December–January is also possible in a warm, protected location.
- Avoid outdoor sowing during June–August because of extreme heat.
- Ideal germination temperature: approximately 20–28°C.
🌿 Seed Preparation
Ipomoea seeds have a hard outer coating. Light scarification can improve and speed up germination.
- Gently scratch or nick a small area of the seed coat using fine sandpaper or a nail file.
- Take care not to damage the inside of the seed.
- Soak the seeds in warm water for 8–12 hours.
- Sow immediately after soaking.
🌿 How to Sow
- Use a loose, fertile, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Sow the seeds approximately 1–1.5 cm deep.
- Cover with a thin layer of growing medium.
- Water gently and thoroughly.
- Keep the medium consistently moist but not saturated.
- Place the container in a warm, bright location.
- Germination usually occurs within 5–14 days.
- Once seedlings begin vigorous growth, provide a strong trellis, fence, arch, or other support.
🌱 Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings have developed 2–3 sets of true leaves.
- Handle the root system carefully.
- Space plants approximately 30–60 cm apart.
- Plant where the vine has enough room to climb and spread.
- If growing in containers, choose a large, deep pot with drainage holes.
☀️ Growing & Care
- Sunlight: Full sun to light partial shade.
- In the Gulf, morning sun with afternoon protection is beneficial during periods of extreme heat.
- Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well drained.
- Watering: Water deeply when the upper soil begins to dry.
- Keep young plants consistently hydrated while they establish.
- Avoid permanently wet soil.
- Fertilizer: Add compost before planting and use a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may produce abundant foliage with fewer flowers.
🌸 Flowering & Training
- Flowering can begin approximately 8–12 weeks after sowing under favorable conditions.
- Flowers generally open in the morning.
- Guide young stems onto the trellis as they grow.
- Spread vines evenly over the support to improve light exposure and flowering.
- Remove damaged or overcrowded growth when necessary.
🌡 Gulf Climate Tips
- October–November is particularly suitable for Kuwait.
- A February–March sowing can also produce excellent results.
- During summer heat, protect the root zone with mulch.
- Provide afternoon shade during extreme temperatures.
- Protect young vines from hot, dry winds.
- Water preferably in the early morning.
- Increase watering frequency during periods of intense heat, but always maintain good drainage.
- Do not allow the pot or soil to remain standing in water.
Tip: For Kuwait, sow Giant Floral Ipomoea ‘Blue Picotee’ in October–November for strong establishment during mild weather. Its vigorous climbing habit makes it particularly attractive for trellises, fences, arches, and pergolas.
