Giant Floral Ipomoea ‘Red Picotee’ is well suited to warm Gulf conditions. For the best germination and establishment, sow during the milder months and protect young plants from extreme summer heat.

🌱 Best Sowing Time

  • Gulf: September–April.
  • Kuwait: October–November is an excellent sowing period.
  • A second good window is February–March.
  • December–January is suitable when seeds are started in a warm, protected location.
  • Avoid outdoor sowing during June–August because of extreme heat.
  • Ideal germination temperature: approximately 20–28°C.

🌿 Seed Preparation

Ipomoea seeds have a hard seed coat. Light scarification can help improve germination.

  1. Gently scratch a small area of the seed coat using fine sandpaper or a nail file.
  2. Do not cut deeply into the seed.
  3. Soak the seeds in warm water for 8–12 hours.
  4. Sow immediately after soaking.

🌿 How to Sow

  1. Use a loose, fertile, organic-rich, well-drained seed-starting mix.
  2. Sow seeds approximately 1–1.5 cm deep.
  3. Cover lightly with growing medium.
  4. Water gently and thoroughly.
  5. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  6. Place the seed container in a warm, bright location.
  7. Germination normally occurs within 5–14 days under suitable conditions.
  8. Once the seedlings begin climbing, provide a strong trellis, fence, arch, or pergola.

🌱 Transplanting

  • Transplant when seedlings have developed 2–3 sets of true leaves.
  • Handle the roots gently.
  • Space plants approximately 30–60 cm apart.
  • Choose a location where the vine has sufficient room to climb and spread.
  • For containers, use a large, deep pot with excellent drainage.

☀️ Growing & Care

  • Sunlight: Full sun to light partial shade.
  • In Gulf conditions, morning sun with afternoon protection is beneficial during very hot weather.
  • Soil: Fertile, loose, organic-rich, and well drained.
  • Water: Water deeply when the upper soil begins to dry.
  • Keep young plants regularly watered while they establish.
  • Avoid constantly saturated soil.
  • Fertilizer: Incorporate compost before planting and use a balanced fertilizer during active growth.
  • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leaves and vines rather than flowers.

🌸 Flowering & Training

  • Flowering can begin approximately 8–12 weeks after sowing under favorable conditions.
  • Flowers generally open during the morning.
  • Train young stems onto their support as they grow.
  • Spread vines evenly across the trellis for better light exposure.
  • Remove damaged or excessively crowded growth when necessary.

🌡 Gulf Climate Tips

  • October–November is particularly suitable for Kuwait.
  • February–March is another excellent sowing window.
  • During extreme summer heat, provide afternoon shade and protect the root zone with mulch.
  • Protect young vines from hot, dry winds.
  • Water preferably in the early morning.
  • Increase watering during very hot periods while maintaining excellent drainage.
  • Avoid leaving containers standing in water.

Tip: For Kuwait, sow Giant Floral Ipomoea ‘Red Picotee’ during October–November for strong establishment during the cooler growing season. Its vigorous vines are excellent for trellises, fences, arches, and pergolas.
